2020-2022

The Covid Era

Although the Rescue Centre and the Rehema Primary and Secondary School continued to do well there was, over recent years, the ever increasing problem of lack of water due to the failing annual rains coupled with the fact that the existing Borehole was yielding less and less water - there was usually enough water for the Boys and Staff  at the Centre but the Farm was really suffering with crops failing and livestock suffering.

This situation was starting to give real cause for concern and as a result, in 2021, Children's Aid International (Kenya) launched their 'Borehole 2022' Fund-raiser and over a period of only a few months in late 2022 a total of nearly £30,000 had been raised from Sponsors large and small including substantial amounts from another Christian Charitable Trust which expressed an interest in the scheme.

As a result of the funds raised the International Children's Mission was able to install a 280metre deep Borehole, an array of Solar Panels to power the 3 Phase Pump necessary to raise the water and 9 No. 10,000 litre Water Storage Tanks together with all the necessary Supply Pipework to the different locations of the Centre and for irrigation on the Farm. In addition, the abundance of water now coming to the surface enabled the Centre to feed two large Lined Fish Ponds into which they have introduced a number of  Tilapia 'fishlings' with the intention of raising and farming the Tilapia fish (this fish makes up 70% of the total fish consumed on the continent of Africa). The Centre is fortunate to have a Veterinary Surgeon as one of their neighbours who advises on the rearing of these fish. As an additional benefit, the Centre has installed much needed guttering to many of the existing Dormitory Blocks, Classroom Blocks, etc. and connected these to the newly installed Water Tanks.
